Wilson Bio-Chemical shortlisted in GLOBAL energy awards for Sustainable Aviation Fuel project

Posted on: September 21st, 2021 by Sheila No Comments

A trailblazing circular economy project to advance the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) has secured a finalist place at the global Energy Institute 2021 Awards.

Wilson Bio-Chemical Ltd are working on Waste-to-Wings, a project to future-proof and scale up the production of greener jet fuel by using circular economy practices and aerospace industry derived waste as the primary feedstock to manufacture sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The Waste-to-Wings SAF project has impressed the judging panel of the Energy Institute Awards and secured Wilson Bio-Chemical (WBC) a nomination in the Low Carbon category. Waste-to-Wings explores how SAF can be produced from bioethanol, produced from micro-organisms found in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), e.g., the contents of the office rubbish bag, average canteen waste bin, or commercial skips.

WBC have developed a decarbonisation solution, working across the aerospace supply chain to map and build a circular economy framework for the project. Specifically, engaging with waste producers within the entire downstream supply chain, forging links with airports, airlines, air freight forwarders and lower-tier stakeholders.

Tom Wilson, Managing Director at Wilson Bio-Chemical said: “I am very proud that our work aligned to Waste-to-Wings has been nominated for a global energy institute award. Pivotal to our success has been our team’s commitment and positive contribution in moving the project forward from its development stage”.

Tom continued: “We are pleased to have been recognised for our hard work and professionalism across the full scope of developing circular supply chains by energy sector peers and by aviation industry stakeholders”.

“The aviation industry is committed to an industry-wide plan to reach net zero CO2 emissions including carbon-neutral growth and we’re delighted Wilson Bio-Chemical’s SAF project has been recognised for developing innovative decarbonisation solutions to global aerospace challenges.”

Attracting over 120 entries across 29 countries from some of the world’s biggest organisations in industry, the awards recognise the very best projects in the global energy environment.

The overall winners will be announced at a virtual online ceremony on Thursday 25 November 2021 where business leaders, energy sector peers and innovators will gather to celebrate the year’s best energy industry projects.

Wilson Bio Chemical Limited is proud to announce that its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project has been nominated for two top engineering awards at the Midlands and East of England regional – Make UK Manufacturing Awards including a finalist place in the much-coveted 2021 Energy & Sustainability awards and a shortlisting in the innovation category for a joint entry alongside our circular economy partners, HSSMI Limited.

The prestigious Make UK Manufacturing Awards, celebrate the outstanding people, teams, and collaborative projects from the world of manufacturing, sustainability, and engineering consultancy. A wide range of themes are recognised by the awards including business performance, the future of manufacturing, Net Zero, inclusive employers, emerging professionals, and apprentices. Our shortlisted entries focused on sustainability and specialist innovations to future-proof the production of greener jet fuel, aligning circular economy frameworks and aerospace industry derived waste as the primary feedstock to manufacture sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The winners for the Midlands and East of England region will be announced next month at a black-tie dinner on Wednesday 13 October. More than 500 manufacturing peers, engineers, business leaders and innovators will gather at The Slate conference centre, University of Warwick in Coventry to celebrate best practice and innovation applied across the region’s landmark engineering projects.

About Wilson Bio Chemical Limited
We’re designers, engineers, chemists, and circular economy innovators, together we’ve developed the Wilson System® – a patented chemical-recycling system to separate and homogenise the biogenic contents of commercially and industrially derived waste and convert it to platform chemicals to produce sustainable fuels. Aero engine performance analysis shows that the Wilson System® significantly reduces emission profiles of aviation fuels by up to 95%. In this project, the WBC system will future-proof and help turn bioethanol into a sustainable fuel for aviation.

About HSSMI Limited
HSSMI is a sustainable manufacturing innovation consultancy, providing expert advice to help manufacturers scale up, increase productivity and transition to circular economy practices. Its ambition is to accelerate manufacturing competitiveness, whilst decelerating its negative impact on the environment and driving net zero.

About the Make UK Manufacturing Awards
The Make UK Manufacturing Awards are highly regarded within the sector, winning an award, and receiving recognition from the judging panel who are made up of leading engineers and manufacturing peers is seen as a huge badge of honour. The 2021 Midlands and East of England regional winners will be announced at a high-profile dinner, held on Wednesday 13 October.  The successful regional competitors will go on to represent the Midlands and East of England region in the national awards held in London in January 2022.
